Mink River Basin Supper Club

Hi to All and Happy St.Patricks day to yea!! ... The Wingmen are rested and ready to get back to work at least I am. Paul still has some time on his butchered and scared up hands, But he can tell you more bout that later. Our poor 4seasons VB Team is all but in a coma, We managed to limp into a second place tie with the other Northern Door team which put us in a good spot for the tournament play offs. Unfortunately we had to forfeit the first match. We only had one healthy player Rachael, but Tom showed up all bashed up from a bike wreck in Mex. Bonnie recovering from a tore calf showed up being the Spartans that they are. Dave said he would play if we need him, he just had quadruple bypass heart surgery, Paul surgery on his wrist me with a fused ankle but we still have a chance for 3rd. So we continue da best we can. Which happens to be the slogan for our next review "Giv'er at the River" The locals northern hot spot the Mink River Basin, Which we just call TheMink.!
We have not worked for a while so that was a little different not shaking off the saw dust and shutten down the chipper, having that big working outside gota get to those wings appetite, but still the lucky sob that i am gets to satisfy that primal urge to rip into those hot, spicy and really saucy wings and some of the coldest, ice on the top and a tint of bit-O-the Green for St.Patricks day Beer's that I have had any where on the peninsula!!

We sat at one of the tables off to the side of the bar and started with a couple bloody's n chasers which Linden got them out to us pretty fast in spite of a pretty busy bar. It was busy at first about 3:30 when we got there then it thinned out and we started with a doz of the Hot ones. Linden came back with them we needed something to compare too so we ordered a doz reg Hot Wings. I was surprised not to find any drumsticks in the first batch and was wondering if it was a fluke or not, Sure enough not a drummy to be had in the next batch either. I didn't find out why that is, the wing man prefers the wings anyways, But I like some meat on the legs with some grille marks on the hot sauce that has some bite to it!! The second batch was almost as hot as the Hot ones, not much of a difference in heat but more sauce on the reg ones , very tasty.!!

Paul -- It seems like forever since the 2wingmen journeyed off for a critique. However, you can only go on so many vacations before you end up back in your hometown of Door County!! Let the wing eating begin...We started out with a terrific bloody mary at the Mink River Basin served by Linden the Waiter/owner of the Basin. A order of hot wings and mild wings were on the way. We started off with the hot ones and by the appearance alone, i knew what was to come. The Mink Rivers hot wings were a touch hotter than the uff-da's of Northern Grill, Reclaiming the #1 hottest wings to date!!! The hot wings were polished off just in time for the new plate of mild wings. These were exactly what i needed after downing my bloody mary, chaser, and coke... Don't get me wrong, the mild still had a kick but not the after affects of the hot. Linden and the Mink River definitely have some hot wings to be reckoned with!!! And i'll be in later for that complimentary shot that was offered....

Hot..!! Wings at Grille in Palm Springs!!

Pic of The Week....
Palm Springs Wings.!!

Hi to all,,, meat eaters and non meat eaters. This blog will give some insite to what is going on in the Door County area eateries, Even in the winter when not much is going-on except for broomball, vollyball and some other snow sports.. This is the other wingman Paul's and my first attempt on focusing on hot wings in the DC area. Hopefully we will be changing and evolving the format as we go. We will be posting lots of pic's and interviewing experts and business people from all around the peninsula. We will be grading every thing from service, price, atmosphere and of course all about the chicken and sauce's. Paul and I will keep our findings and critique's seperate and unbiased of each place we visit.

Northern Grill Wings, Sunday, Febuary 16, 2009

Paul N-
At first i didnt think the day could start any worse. Dave and i were cutting wood when the chain flew off my saw and hit me in the leg, i brushed it off and kept working. The other factor implies that saturday was valentines day, and the only way we thought to warm the heart was with some hot wings!!! So we ventured off to the Northern Grill after work. We started the afternoon out with a bloody mary, coke, and some nickels. The nickel game really kicked our ass so we went back to our table and ordered some hot wings. One basket of regular wings and one basket of wimpy wings were ordered with a side of Uff-DA sauce. Let me tell you that this sauce has by far been the hottest sauce on the visits. The two different orders were both crispy plus the regular order was already cooked with hot sauce, but the side of Uff-DA sauce doubled that in no time! All in all, Northern Grill has a Door County atmosphere that even Craig D. Natzke wouldn't take for granted.

When the wingman is right he is totaly right.!! This place just totally reek's of the Door,. in a Good way. From the north woods look of the rustic wood and log finish, to the mascot moose on the floor by the entry to the back dinning room and the one over the back of the bar. Lot's of little stuff that add up to a great place to come party with a bunch of people in the back dinning area or in the summer, out side on the patio with ton's of tables and nice fire place, things for the kids to do in a play yard, or a booth to watch the games on the big tv's with your special some one. There is so much going on it's easy to miss and might even learn a little some thing if your not careful. Erick the bar tender is like a wise sage and is willing to share some of his knowledge, Like that chaser u get with your drink that i am holding up it's called a "snit" Yea it's German.! Bet you didn't know Ron's famous brother Pat is behind the bar too?

This is an excellant all around place to get the Door flavor. They have a game room a pool table and one of the few places that have a nickle machine. Kathy and Grant were working when we sat at a table in the middle. We pretty much had the place to ourselves. Kathy really helped with our food order and explained every thing from wimpy to Uff-Da for us. Man I tell u.. the most spice so far..!! The last place we checked out was a one wet nap this was a three for the extra hot plus the uff-da scauce on the side Sher...Gut.!! The uff da had little junks of peppers almost like home made salsa, the best I have tried so far, So Grant,.. talk wasn't cheap after All... my complements.

After work takeing down trees on cottage row all mourning it didn't take much prodding to decide to go to the Slyde for hot wings, it was about 2 in the afternoon and not many people in the bar. We didn't see any waiter people, so we sat at the sunny side of the bar. It's kind of a typical wi bar two u shaped bars together with a couple of big screen tv's some tables along the walls and one in the middle of the room in front as you walk in the door. The back side of the bar tends to be a little darker so I like the front part. One of the perks to my job is meeting the people behind the bar and behind the scenes sort of, like the waiting staff, cooks, suppliers, dishwashers. It takes a lot of stuff to happen to get those scrumptious wings and drinks in front of me, which i am learning and appreciating as i go. I have met some very interesting people and good friends in this industry and I hope that will cotinue as I am one Lucky sob..!!
Bill and Ted's most excellant adventures were behind the bar, They are cool and among DC's best at what they do. I know I'm a pain in the ass cause I drink a lot-o-tea sometimes with my wings and they keep em comming. If your lucky Ted will break out in a rendition of Elvis, Try to catch him at the end of the nite for a now or never or other top ten Ted's (Elvis) hits!!
I really liked the wings, They were meaty and not a lot of sauce on them, Just how i like em!
Its funny how Paul and I differ on a few things but ends up the same Total points, so far...Later.

for the other wingman -Paul N-, this was the best wing visit to date. Even though i'm a huge fan of the Slyde, the wings were crispy, hot, and filling!!!! I was alittle disappointed not to see the man, the myth, the legend--LOGGER, but it was only 2 in the afternoon. The two o'clock lunch crowd was alittle slow but we chatted with the chef which definately made the experience, he also played on an undefeated vball team with my fellow wingman -Dave W-... BAYSIDE is the birthplace where the wingmen came up with this wing idea, and will hold all other critques accountable.

Checking-out the C&C Supper Club

When u walk in the door my first impression is Big, Nice bar!! 2nd is Pool table just to the left with lots of big TV's and really clean, sporty but fancy place. Lots of tables around and some spots for live music to play and A local favorite, A make your own taco bar at the end of the pool table on Mon nites. $1.50 for hrd or soft tacos. That's what I like in a place that tends to be high-end but will have good drink specials and food deals for the locals. We could sit any where so we took a table next to the window and could watch the game on the big tv over the middle of the bar, Sweet! Our server was Samantha and told us the specials and helped us figure out our order, and I still made a huge faux pas by ordering chicken tenders with our spicy wings and extra spicy wings. Samantha was happy to change it to the combo appetizer basket that had All the good stuff plus tenders. Thanks Paul for the save.
We got our 3 baskets of food, hot wing's and ranch sauce pretty fast after our drinks. The two types of wings med and hot were really good and meaty. Medium were only marginally spicy, enough to feel the spice and that's it. The extra spicy are definitey hotter but I still needed to dip into the hot sauce for my likins!! I didn't try any other sauces but I put that hot wing sauce on Every thing... good eats!!

We stopped at the Neighbor Hood Pub after Our Volley Ball match at the Sturgeon Bay
Y last Mon night, which we took 2 out of 3 off a good Y's own team. We are in a tight race
for the second place spot with 3 other teams, A much improved and fun vb league with A
and B division VB makes our mon nights in the winter in Door much more fun!
We were all in a hurry to go places so no time to really talk Wings but we got some info on them and sound's like a very good place to check out for sports fans. Our resident Wings expert, officia-nado and teammate Ivan who we refer to as SheepDog, will help us out from time to time on technical aspect's of the Wing's. So looking forward to the Hood's review!!
